For yours is the kingdom, the victory and the majesty, the power and dominion, for all that is in heaven and earth are yours1 Chronicles 29:11a On October 13, 2007, at Reid Temple AME Church on the outskirts of Washington DC, a standing room only audience packed the 3000-plus capacity state-of-the-art worship complex to experience the transforming power of Kirk Whalums The Gospel According to Jazz, Chapter III. Recorded live by three generations of Whalums and some of the most resounding names in Jazz, Pop, Gospel and R&B, The Gospel According to Jazz, Chapter III comes ten years after the first chart-topping Gospel According to Jazz, Chapter I CD debuted, and in the wake of the Grammy nominated, Stellar Award winning second chapter, released in 2002.
Although Whalum—who lives up to his reputation as the most influential saxophonist of his generation—is front and center throughout, this is undoubtedly an ensemble recording. He shares the stage with what could be called the Whalum dynasty (three generations and six Whalums: brother Kevin (vocals); Uncle Peanuts (vocals, sax, and piano); son, Kyle (electric bass); nephews Kenneth III (saxophone) and Kortland (vocals), plus first cousin Caleb tha Bridge (vocals/rap). The unparalleled George Duke, featured on both I and II, returns on keys, and is joined by vocalist Lalah Hathaway, guitarist Doc Powell, keyboardist/vocalist John Stoddart, trumpeter/vocalist Aaron Broadus, stand-up bassist, Reginald Veal, Ta Ta you Jesus - Kirk WhalumKirk Whalum: Pass me not o gentle saviorHe's Been Just That Good (Live) Kirk Whalum by kucoo1206Kirk Whalum: God Has Smiled On MeKenneth Whalum III - Precious Lord Take My HandFalling In Love With Jesus - Kirk Whalum - Jonathan Buttler
Richard Smallwood & Vision - Persuaded Live in D.C.
Few sounds in Gospel are as recognizable as those that come from Richard Smallwood.
Be it his songwriting, those classical piano solos, or that resonant, richly textured thickness that is the hallmark of his vocal ensembles, the ear cannot mistake his genius.
No, the beauty here is that Persuaded embraces all that is so beloved of previous projects, but also explores beyond, giving even more to appreciate. The D.C.-based maestro demonstrates in front of the packed Jericho City of Praise church, that our God is One who knows no creative bounds.
Smallwood brings back his familiar top-notch collaborators. Steven Ford once again joins him in production and keyboards, Darin Atwater orchestrates, Bryan Pugh, Mark Walker, Jeff Davis and Jonathan Dubose play, and the entire Vision roster sing their hearts out.
As expected and hoped for, the album begins with a full, live, symphonic intro, "Procession of the Levites", composed by Atwater. The work neatly flows into the intricate "Anthem of Praise" which deftly combines symphonic elements with the Gospel sound as Vision sings texts from Psalm 150 and 34.
Smallwoods' mid-album piano solo on the project is a well-received medley of two hymns that melts into an audience-participation reprise. Titled "It Is Well With My Soul / Come Ye Disconsolate", it begins with a lengthy, thunderous keyboard storm with an immediately simple right hand melody calming the force.
The combination eloquently paints in music the meaning of the words that we are all singing along in our heads. Even with chaos and storms going around us, we who rest in Jesus Christ are nevertheless secure —it is well within our souls.

Frank Williams, founder of the group, began singing gospel music in churches as a child, spending his evenings immersed in the sounds and ways of the gospel under the guiding hand of his father, Leon. Frank performed with his brothers in an act know as The Williams Brothers, later joining the Jackson Southernaires. After many years of touring as an artist, Frank had a vision that the great and soulful voices of Mississippi needed to be captured in choir. For nine years this idea grew in his mind until he could contain it no longer. He approached his gospel-writing friend, David Curry, with his ambitions and the rest is history! The two sent audition announcements via radio across the state of Mississippi and tapes began pouring in. With great enthusiasm, the people of Mississippi thrust themselves into the mission of this choir, to serve God through song. Redefining the choir experience, each concert is like a rousing church service, with a Reverend at the helm. Skillfully weaving a scriptural message into the soul-stirring, roof-raising gospel sounds of the singers, Reverend Benjamin Cone, the choir's spiritual advisor, delivers with the authority of one who knows God personally. His presence on stage commands attention, his deep articulate voice bears listening. By the end of the concert, there is no one left who has remained in their seat throughout, no voice unsung, no hands left hanging limply at anyone's side, and no one who hasn't felt a mountain move within them by what they have just experienced. The Mississippi Mass Choir moves the masses.
Serving God Through Song" is the motto and the mission of The Mississippi Mass Choir. Although striving to succeed in the gospel music industry, the choir's purpose is to help establish the gospel of Jesus Christ throughout the world. Since its formation in 1988, the choir has won numerous honors and awards for its contributions to gospel music. The group has traveled extensively throughout the United States, toured Japan and appeared in Nassau, the Bahamas. When you consider the level of success enjoyed by this relatively novice group of singers, it becomes evident that serving the Lord pays off.

DEITRICK HADDON REVEALED "I'm sitting here thinking to myself / People all over the world are in need of help / From the shores of India back to the hood / People everywhere are misunderstood / But I believe love is the answer / I believe that we still can come together / Holding on to what I know is true / I’m pouring my heart out to you / You and I are one the same / Red blood flowing through one vein / I hear your crying for a change / I feel your pain…” - from “One Blood” Deitrick Haddon - Well Done
Deitrick Vaughn Haddon (born May 17, 1973) is a Gospel singer, songwriter, producer and pastor. A popular artist known for his contemporary style of music, he is well known for his progressive gospel styles.
Haddon borm in Detroit, Michigan launched his solo career as a Christian R&B vocalist with the Lost & Found on Tyscot/Verity in 2002. The set peaked at #1 on Billboard's Top Gospel Charts and received wide critical acclaim and spawned the hit "Sinner's Prayer" which received heavy spins on gospel and mainstream R&B radio stations.
Things can never be too big when it comes to the dreams of contemporary gospel visionary Deitrick Haddon. You can feel it in the epic reach of his dizzyingly diverse and masterful music tracks. You can hear it in the ache and urgency of his amazing lyrics. And you can see it in the photo on his album cover – one man, one microphone addressing one world with the dawn of a new day at his back. On his 10th album, REVEALED, Deitrick Haddon summons the totality of his artistic vision and gifts to take statements of spirituality beyond church walls in hopes of impacting the universe on a major level. The essential message: we are one “I have this vision of everybody with their lighters in their hands singing that chorus,” he says of the powerful album highlight “One Blood” - all races, everybody. I believe that gospel music can be just as big as rock - filling stadiums. But our music has to reach beyond our religious beliefs to connect on a greater level. I wanted to speak to everybody about how we all need each other. We're all one big family. If Adam and Eve are the mother and father of humanity, then we are all family - ‘red blood flowing through one vein.’ It's funny how when tragedy happens, everybody is able to come together. From the rise of a tsunami to the fall of the Twin Towers, everybody prides themselves on helping each other. That influenced my approach to the songs of REVEALED. They are not ‘religious’ songs so much as spiritual songs that can appeal to everybody.”
Deitrick Haddon - Mighty God
“I wanted to do away with all the religious terminology - remove all the walls that we have set up as Christians. Often times, we put up a facade that everything is wonderful - everyone else is messed up and we're the ones that have it all together. I wanted to break up all that!” Among the most vulnerable and personal messages on REVEALED is “Ungrateful,” Deitrick Haddon Ungrateful

I'll Say Yes - The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir, I'll Say Yes
The Brooklyn Tabernacle was established in 1847 as the Central Presbyterian Church, using the facilities of the First Presbyterian Church, at the corner of Willoughby Street and Pearl. Their first building was a frame tabernacle on the corner of State and Nevins Streets, beginning April 3, 1853. The first tabernacle was destroyed by fire in 1869. The second Brooklyn Tabernacle was built in 1873 at the corner of Marcy and Jefferson. This tabernacle was destroyed during a terrific thunderstorm in 1889. The third tabernacle, built at the corner of Clinton Avenue and Greene Street, seated 6,000 persons, was destroyed by fire in 1894, but then rebuilt at the same location.
By the time Pastor Jim and Carol Cymbala took over the leadership in the autumn of 1971, the congregation had dwindled to just 30 people who met in a rundown building on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn.
In the 1980s, the Brooklyn Tabernacle purchased the former Carlton Theatre at 292 Flatbush Avenue at 7th Avenue, converting the 1383-seat theatre into a church. After many years of decline, the church was revitalized as a non-denominational congregation, and became nationally famous as the home of the award-winning Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir. The church remained in this location until 2002 when they purchased and renovated the former Loew's Metropolitan Theatre at 17 Smith Street.
The current building was completely redone by Robert Silman Associate by gutting and renovating the old vaudeville theater for modern worship and with state-of-the-art designed acoustics and high-tech recording equipment. The worship area seats 3,200 people. Two adjacent buildings were converted into offices, classrooms, community service areas, and dining facilities.
I Need You Once Again - The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir, I'll Say Yes
The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir is directed by Carol Cymbala, the wife of Pastor Jim Cymbala. The 280-voice choir, which for the most part is composed of vocally untrained church members, has recorded three videos, three DVDs and numerous albums, winning five Dove Awards and six Grammy Awards. Their concert venues in New York City have included Carnegie Hall, Radio City Music Hall, and the Madison Square Garden Theater. They also had the honor of singing at the Billy Graham Crusades that were held in New York City’s Central Park and Flushing Meadows Park. The recognition that the choir has received has provided them with a wide open door for ministry in presenting the gospel message through music to people all over the world.

You'll Never Walk Alone - Aretha Franklin, Gospel Greats 1999 album
Aretha Franklin's Gospel Greats 1999 album are songs that were originally released as a double LP in 1972, Amazing Grace cracked the Billboard Top Ten upon its release, making it one of the bestselling gospel records of all time. Grace was recorded in a large Baptist church with aultraenthusiastic, loving audience in the pews and a full, funky, band as well as the Southern California Community Choir under the direction of her mentor Rev. James Cleveland. Her voice is melismatic and intensely emotional, yet pure and controlled--as if she were directly channeling the Holy Ghost. Aretha's father, the brilliant preacher Rev. C.L. Franklin, makes a brief, proud appearance, remarking how "she has never left the church!" Highlights include the beautiful "Wholy Holy," an 11-minute, heart-stopping "Amazing Grace," and Inez Andrews's stirring song "Mary, Don't You Weep." Way more than a return-to-the-roots record, the set is an inspired gospel-soul workout that arguably showcases Aretha's strongest singing ever. Parts extracted from review by Mike McGonigal.
