Larnelle Harris

                                      Larnelle Harris

Larnelle Steward Harris born July 6, 1947 is an American gospel singer and songwriter.  He is a native of Danville, Kentucky. During his 50 years of ministry, Harris has recorded 18 albums, won five Grammy Awards and 11 Dove Awards, and has had several number one songs on the inspirational music charts.

Harris started playing the drums at the age of nine. His first formal vocal training came when he attended college. Larnelle attended college at Western Kentucky University, from where he graduated in 1969. Harris then became a part of the popular gospel touring group The Spurrlows, beginning as drummer.

Larnelle met his wife Cynthia (also known as Mitzy) while both were students at Western Kentucky University. They have two children Lonnie (Larnelle Jr.) and Teresa.
They have lived in Louisville for more than three decades. Despite his schedule, Harris serves as a deacon in his home church, and previously served as its treasurer. Harris is well-known within the gospel music industry for his reluctance to schedule performances that take him away from his family for any length of time.

For five decades, Larnelle Harris has sustained one of the most respected and inspiring music ministries that’s amassed no less than nineteen #1 radio singles, five GRAMMY Awards, countless Doves, plus a double induction into the Gospel Music Hall Of Fame (both as a solo artist and member of the Gaither Vocal Band). Larnelle Harris was named Orchestra Kentucky’s 2017 recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award in the Arts and Humanities.

Larnelle Harris was honored with a Heritage Award from the National Convention of Gospel Choirs and Choruses (NCGCC) at their 83rd annual convention in Harris’ hometown of Louisville, Kentucky.  Harris says it was a humbling experience.

“The NCGCC has a long and storied history,” said Harris. “I was most grateful for the recognition, and privileged to be part of their event.”

Harris will be the first Christian vocalist to receive the Artist Award since its inception 29 years ago.

In 2018, Harris released his first memoir entitled “Shaped Notes: How Ordinary People with Extraordinary Gifts Influenced my Life and Career.” The book went to #1 on Amazon within three days of its release. Later this year, Larnelle will release his first Christmas musical, based on his original song “All Year Long” from his Grammy Award-winning Christmas album. The musical was co-written with Dave Clark and Nick Robertson, and will be exclusively available through Lifeway.
