Maranatha! Singers
Maranatha! Singers God's Love
Maranatha is an Aramaic word that means “the Lord is coming” or “come, O Lord.” The early church faced much persecution, and life for a Christian under Roman rule was not easy. The Romans required everyone to declare that Caesar was god. The early Christians knew that there is only one God and one Lord—Jesus Christ—and in all good conscience they could not call Caesar “Lord,” so the Romans looked upon them as traitors, persecuted them, and put them to death.
Living under those adverse conditions, the believers’ morale was lifted by the hope of the coming of the Lord. “Maranatha!” became the common greeting of the oppressed believers, replacing the Jewish greeting shalom (“peace”). The followers of Jesus knew there would be no peace because Jesus had told them so (Matthew 10:34; Luke 12:51). But they also knew the Lord would be returning to set up His kingdom, and from that truth they drew great comfort. They were constantly reminding and being reminded that the Lord is coming (Luke 21:28; Revelation 22:12). Jesus taught several parables on this same theme of watching and waiting and being prepared for His return (Matthew 25:1-13; Luke 12:35-40).
Today, believers in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ live our lives in the light of the knowledge that He can come at any time. We are to be ready when the call comes. Every day we should expect Him to come, and every day we should long for Him to come. Maranatha reminds us to keep our eyes on the eternal things of the Spirit. To dwell on material things is to be in constant mental turmoil. Looking down, we see the earth; looking around, we see earthly things. But looking up, we see the hope of the soon coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. To those who are discouraged today, Maranatha! To those who are worried today, Maranatha! To those who are filled with anxiety over the problems they are facing, Maranatha! Our Lord is coming!

Maranatha! Music began as a non-profit outreach of Calvary Chapel in 1971. The Jesus People of the late 1960s and early 1970s began to write new hymns and worship songs with a folk-rock style. Maranatha! Music was founded at this time in order to publish and promote this new type of Christian music. Founder Chuck Smith sold the label to his nephew Chuck Fromm. The label is currently distributed by Warner Music Entertainment's Word Music.
In the early 1970s Calvary Chapel was home to more than 15 musical groups that were representative of the Jesus people movement. Some of the early Maranatha! recording groups were Sweet Comfort Band, Love Song, Chuck Girard, Children of the Day, The Way, Debby Kerner, Mustard Seed Faith, Karen Lafferty, and Daniel Amos. The label's first release was a various artists compilation entitled The Everlastin' Living Jesus Music Concert, in 1971.

She received a Grammy Award, which she won in 2012 for Best Gospel/Contemporary Christian Music Performance.
Le’Andria is enjoying critical acclaim and tremendous success, but for the 29-year-old, twice divorced mother of three, it has been a long and often arduous journey to the spotlight in the gospel music industry. An accomplished singer and songwriter and an anointed praise and worship leader, Le’Andria was born in Orlando, Florida and began singing and performing for her family at two years old. When she was four, the family moved to the small town of Palatka, Florida, where she lived until she returned to Orlando in 2003.
Her father, Dr. G.A. Johnson, Sr., served as presiding Bishop of the Head Quarters (HQ) Ministries. She began singing at her father’s church at the age of six and became praise and worship leader when she was 16. Throughout her childhood and teen years, Le’Andria sang in school choruses and in community talent shows. At 17, she had her first performance before a major audience when she sang for 8,000 people at a conference sponsored by gospel legend Pastor Shirley Caesar. She also sang with gospel artists Luther Barnes, Jimmy Hicks and Voices of Integrity and the Williams Brothers, as well as at churches in Southern Florida, Georgia and North Carolina.
A licensed minister, Le’Andria believes that singing is her God-given talent, but that ministry is her calling. As she ministers through music, she hopes that her songs will continue to make a difference in people’s lives.

Bishop F.C.Barnes
BY DAVID MENCONI
Faircloth "F.C." Barnes, the gospel music icon from Rocky Mount, died Monday at a hospital in Greenville after a period of failing health. He was 82.
For more than half a century, the Rev. Barnes led Red Budd Holy Church in Rocky Mount, a renowned "singing church" where the Word was as likely to be sung as spoken. He was best-known for the hit "Rough Side of the Mountain," a song that sounds traditional enough to be at least a century old. Barnes wrote it in 1982.
Rev. F.C. Barnes songs playlist
"I once asked how he'd describe his music, and Rev. Barnes answered, 'Like I look,' " UNC-Chapel Hill folklore professor Glenn Hinson said Wednesday. "I asked what he meant, and without a pause he said, 'Old-timey.' He always held onto the old-time traditional style."
You could say that Barnes was born to be a minister. His father sang gospel, and his grandfather and five uncles were all preachers. So he grew up singing, which continued when he founded Red Budd in 1959 in a converted juke joint near the little Nash County town of Castalia.
The civil rights era brought trouble, including a 1963 bombing that reduced Red Budd's original building to rubble and forced a move to Rocky Mount. But the music kept playing, and Red Budd's reputation grew over the years.
Notable musicians to emerge from Red Budd include the reverend's son, Luther Barnes, a big star on the gospel circuit.
"We just had more or less of a singing family, and we're still going in that direction," Rev. Barnes said more than a decade ago. "I have four sons and they all sing. So do their children, their brothers, and their children. And I'm the pastor of all of them."
"Rough Side of the Mountain" became enough of a standard to earn a gold record after the album of the same name sold more than 500,000 copies. But Barnes wrote other songs that became equally popular in the gospel canon.
Wayne Martin, folklife director of the N.C. Arts Council, recently served on a National Endowment for the Arts panel reviewing grant applications from gospel groups and was struck by how many applicants performed Barnes songs.
"Just on the basis of 'Rough Side of the Mountain,' he was one of the most important gospel composers of our time," Martin said Wednesday. "His music is so direct, so much a product of his own experience, that people can relate to it. And even after getting into the mainstream, he still had very traditional roots reflecting his experiences in North Carolina African-American communities.
"He's been a real cultural treasure for us."
Barnes is survived by his wife, Addrine Gaskins Barnes; and four sons, two daughters, 11 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, four brothers, five sisters, two uncles and one aunt.

Donald Vails - Choirs and Choraleers
Donald Vails - Choirs and Choraleers - Playlist
A native of Atlanta Georgia, The Reverend Donald Vails' early years were spent in a warm chrsitian enviroment replete with positive role models and achievers from whom he drew inspiration and encouragement. Reverend Vails had the unique experience of attending The Atlanta Gospel Choral Union Day Nursery, where christian principles, music lessons, love and discipline were dispensed in a program geared to produce positive leaders.
Central to these years were the experience he gained as member of Atlanta's Mt. Zion Baptist Church. It was here that the first indications of the magnitude of his musical talents and natural leadership were foreshadowed. At a time when most young people wer just beginning to develop a sense of identity, at age 12, Reverend Vails was directing his first choir.
In his late teens young Vails left Atlanta to pursue a degree in engineering at theDetroit (Michigan) Institute of Technology. Yet his childhood dream of a career in gospel music was destined to be fufilled. Almost immediately upon his arrival, he was engaged to play for various singing groups in the city. In 1969, he founded the internationally acclaimed Donald Vails Choraleers.
In 1977 Reverend Vails organized the Detroit Youth Kaleidoscope, a program which provided academic, spiritual and physical development for over 3,000 young people. From this group of talented young people came the Voices of Deliverance, whose debut album, "What A Wonderful Savior I've Found" remained on the Billboards Best Selling List for 104 consecutive weeks. In 1979, The Donald Vails Choraleers' album, "He Decided To Die," earned him both a gold album and the first of several Grammy nominations.
The desire to pursue an advanced degree in music education led Reverend Vails in 1985, to Howard University, Washington, D.C. Since relocation to Washington, he has continued, in the spirit of our Lord and Savior, to reach out and touch the lives of young and old alike. In February 1985, he organized the 80 member interdenominational community choir, "Salvation Corporation," and began his affiliation with The Ebenezer African Methodist Episcopal Church of Fort Washington, Maryland. In March of '85, he organized Ebenezer's Young Adult Choir, a group which has grown from 40 orginail members to 175.
June 4, 1987 is another important date in the life of Reverend Vails. The historic Lincoln Memorial was the site of a special taping for "Night of Music 87," a musical production spotlighting classical, country, jazz, gospel and orchestral music, with the internationally recognized Zubin Mehta serving as central conductor. Reverend Vails and The Donald Vails Salvation Corporation were selected as the gospel artist for this special musical event. This show aired on June 20, 1987, on five continents with over 1 billon viewers.
In September 1991, Reverend Vails was named director of the 1100 - voice National Baptist Convention Choir in Washington, D.C., which opened the 111th session of the National Baptist Convention in a musical concert, with an audience of over 18,000.
When not traveling extensively throughout the world, sharing his musical gifts and serving our Savior, Donald Vails devotes his energies to developing christian youth. In Washington, he has organized a charitable not-profit christian organization, The Capital City Youth Choir comprised of over 100 interdenominational evangelical youth.
Reverend Vails also serves as the National Minister of Music for the Gospel Music Workshop of America Mass Choir founded by the late Reverend James Cleveland. Reverend Vails was the Director of Church Music at Ebenezer African Methodist Episcopal Church in Fort Washington, Maryland and personally directs the Voices of Ebenezer, the Adult Choir, The Daughters of Zion and Rejoice choirs. He was married to the former Janine Anderson of Detroit. The family includes two children: a son, Brian, and a daughter, Carmen.

Donny Hathaway - We Need You Right Now Lord
We Need You Right Now Lord
Donny Hathaway was one of the brightest new voices in soul music at the dawn of the '70s, possessed of a smooth, gospel-inflected romantic croon that was also at home on fiery protest material. Hathaway achieved his greatest commercial success as Roberta Flack's duet partner of choice, but sadly he's equally remembered for the tragic circumstances of his death -- an apparent suicide at age 33. Hathaway was born October 1, 1945, in Chicago, but moved to St. Louis when he was very young, and began singing in church with his grandmother at the scant age of three. He began playing piano at a young age, and by high school, he was impressive enough to win a full-ride fine arts scholarship to Howard University to study music in 1964. While in college, he performed with a cocktail jazz outfit called the Ric Powell Trio, and wound up leaving school after three years to pursue job opportunities he was already being offered in the record industry.

Have you ever been disappointed by people
Who call themselves your friends
Said they had your back
Through thick and thin
I know just how you feel
When your so called friends let you down
If you call on Jesus
He'll be there
Have you ever had your back up against the wall
And you didn't know what you were gonna do
Maybe you were ready to throw in the towel
But you've watched God come through
I know a God who's concerned about
Everyone of your situations
All you gotta do is
Call on Jesus- He'll be there
He'll be there
Yes He will
He'll be there
If you call on Jesus
I know He will be right there
Just when your back is up against the wall
I know a name that all you have to do is call
call on Jesus

Yes He will, Yes He will

Long As I Got King Jesus - Vickie Winans
Award-winning singer Vickie Winans comes from a large family of impressive gospel singers. She began her career when she was a small child, performing with family. All grown up, she completed her debut solo album, Be Encouraged, in 1985. It was the first of a long line of recordings that would bring her a number of hits and music awards. Born the seventh child of a still-growing family, Winans was raised in Detroit, MI. Her entire family was a musical one, and deeply religious as well. She was only about eight years old when she began singing at the family church, astounding the audience with her vocal ability. Her love for the Gospel and music was the perfect combination. She's shared success with the famous Winans family, for she married Marvin Winans and eventually joined forces with the gospel group. Vickie's first solo album carries a track that became her signature song, "We Shall Behold Him." The debut full-length offering also earned her a Grammy nomination for Best Female Contemporary Soul Gospel Album, a Stellar Award for Album of the Year, and an Excellence Award for Best Female Contemporary Artist. It was a foretelling of what was to come. Through the latter half of the '80s into the next decade, Winans recorded several award-winning albums. When not in the recording studio, she spent much of her time performing more than 200 nights most years. She has also made numerous television appearances on shows like Oprah, the Grammy Awards, Arsenio Hall, Queen Latifah, and The Pat Sajak Show and starred in Broadway musicals like Don't Get God Started. Winans' music can be deeply gospel, contemporary Christian, or any mixture in between. Her most famous songs include "We Shall Behold Him," "Daddy Can't Sing," "First Trumpet Sound," "The Diet Medley," "Boyfriends," "Its Yo Thang," "Give It One More Try," "Sweeter Than the Honeycomb," and "Little Timmy." In 2002 she released Woman's Journey, followed the next year by Bringing It All Together and, in 2006, Woman to Woman: Songs of Life, a 33-track live and studio album that was ten years in the making. ~ Charlotte Dillon, Rovi
