After 40 years in the industry, Smallwood has done what no other gospel artist arguably has done as successfully: blend gospel with classical music.
Congregations have translated his songs into Korean, German, Hebrew and other languages. He has eight Grammy nominations and within the gospel music industry has won four Dove Awards and 10 Stellars. Three of his 14 albums hit No. 1 in Billboard magazine’s gospel category.

Richard Smallwood (born November 30, 1948 in Atlanta, Georgia) moved to Washington as a child with his mother, Mabel, and his stepfather, the Rev. Chester L. Smallwood, a strict, Bible-enforcing preacher and founder of Union Temple Baptist Church in Southeast. (For more than 30 years, Smallwood has been a member of Metropolitan Baptist Church in Northwest Washington, where he has served as musician and choir director.)
By the time he was 7, he was taking music lessons and continued until he was 15. But young Richard had a secret: He could play only by ear. He couldn’t read music. He’d have each teacher play a song, then he’d memorize the chords and play the song back to his teacher’s delight. “I was used to getting over on my teachers,” he admits.
He formed his first gospel group when he was 11, made up of kids from his Northeast Washington neighborhood. When he was in eighth grade at Browne Junior High, he had a fresh-out-of-Howard University music major as his teacher: Roberta Flack.
He went on to McKinley Technology High School in Northeast, where he auditioned for a music program at Howard. The instructor quickly figured out that Richard could not read music but agreed to admit him if he’d learn.
Smallwood later majored in classical piano with a minor in voice at Howard, beginning in 1967. He was mentored by a talented music major named Donny Hathaway. Hathaway showed him how to play a jazzy version of the hymn “Nothing but the Blood,” Smallwood recalls. “He told me to play and sing what you feel — it’s all God’s music.”
Smallwood helped form Howard’s gospel choir, and sitting in a basement practice room in the fine arts department, he penned what became another of his biggest hits, “I Love the Lord.”
Richard graduated cum laude from Howard University with degrees in both vocal performance and piano, in addition to graduate work in the field of ethnomusicology. Smallwood was a member of The Celestials, the first gospel group on Howard University's campus. That group was the first gospel act to appear at Switzerland's Montreux Jazz Festival. Richard was also a founding member of Howard's first gospel choir.
Smallwood's recording career began in 1982 with the album The Richard Smallwood Singers. The album spent 87 weeks on Billboard's Gospel chart. Its followup, Psalms was nominated for a Grammy. Two years later the album Textures was also nominated. Textures spawned the now-classic "Center Of My Joy" written by Richard Smallwood along with Bill and Gloria Gaither. He won his first Grammy, along with a Dove Award for his production on the Quincy Jones' gospel project Handel's Messiah: A Soulful Celebration.
He finished his Masters degree in Divinity from Howard University in 2004 and was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2006.

Some of the greatest hymns have come from sorrow, for sorrow is universal. Thomas Dorsey wrote “Precious Lord, Take My Hand” in 1932 after his wife and child died. Horatio Spafford wrote the hymn “It Is Well With My Soul” after his four daughters died in a shipwreck in 1873. John Newton, a onetime slave ship captain, wrote the first lines of “Amazing Grace” in the mid-1700s following a stormy journey on a ship.
Smallwood’s songs even transcend faiths. Cantor Sheldon Levin, conductor of the Makhelat Hamercaz Jewish Choir of Central New Jersey, heard “Total Praise” sung by a choir from the Jewish Theological Seminary about two years ago. He taught it to his choir in both English and Hebrew. At a North American Jewish choral festival, they received a standing ovation. “It blew people away,” Levin says.
“Total Praise,” like many of Smallwood’s songs, is based on Psalm 121, in which David wrote about relying on God during his most difficult times: “You are the source of my strength/ You are the strength of my life/ I lift my hands in total praise to You.”
Levin says the words are a universal prayer. “We can all praise God and thank God. It doesn’t have to be a Jewish composer or a Christian composer,” he says. “His music is awe inspiring.”
Kirk Whalum (born July 11, 1958) is an American smooth jazz saxophonist and songwriter. He toured with Whitney Houston for more than seven years and soloed in her single "I Will Always Love You", the best-selling single by a female artist in music history.
Whalum has recorded a series of well received solo albums and film soundtracks, with music ranging from pop to R&B to smooth jazz. Kirk’s musical accomplishments have brought him a total of 12 Grammy nominations. He won his first Grammy award in 2011 for Best Gospel Song (“It’s What I Do”, featuring Lalah Hathaway) alongside lifelong friend and gifted writer, Jerry Peters.

Having collaborated with some of the greats in the industry, be it as song writer, vocalist, sessionist/ producer, Neyi has undoubtedly earned a respect due to him from his colleagues as a multi instrumentalist and an asset to any music project.

The group debuted in 1993 with A Songwriter's Point Of View on a then-brand-new independent record label called GospoCentric Records. The set debuted at #2 on the Billboard Top Gospel Charts.The group's follow-up release Bible Stories would top those same charts when it arrived in 1995.It was the first to be billed as Donald Lawrence & The Tri-City Singers and featured black church-ubiquitous hits such as "A Message For The Saints", "I Am God" and "Stranger". The album was released on Lawrence's newly minted label Crystal Rose Records which was distributed through Sparrow Records.
In 1997, Donald Lawrence produced the live portion of Karen Clark Sheard's Grammy-nominated Finally Karen debut. Lawrence & Tri-City also released the seasonal Hello Christmas the same year. Later, Lawrence signed a contract with the Island Records imprint Island Inspirational. Though a live recording did take place for release,the album never materialized.
In 2000, Donald Lawrence & The Tri-City Singers signed to EMI Gospel. To promote the new album, a maxi CD of the lead single "Testify" to the mainstream. House remixes by Junior Vasquez sent the song to #33 on Billboard's Mainstream Dance Charts. When tri-city4.com was finally released in late summer 2000, the set peaked at #2 on Billboard's Top Gospel Charts and #13 on Billboard's Heatseekers Charts.The album also got a profile boost from the all-star standout "God's Favor", featuring vocal turns from Karen Clark Sheard, Kim Burrell, and Kelly Price.
Lawrence waited almost two years before delivering the follow-up Go Get Your Life Back in early 2002. "The Best Is Yet to Come (Donald Lawrence song)", a song sonically much in the vein of the previous smash "Testify," was chosen as the album's lead single. This release featured guest appearances from Ann Nesby (formerly of Sounds of Blackness) and gospel pioneer Bishop Walter Hawkins. The momentum continued with the 2003 release of Restoring The Years, a greatest hits album featuring two new songs.
The next album would mark a fresh start for Donald Lawrence. I Speak Life was his first solo album, the debut for his newly inked recording contract with Verity Records, and also the first release under his new sublabel Quiet Water Entertainment. Though the album was without The Tri-City Singers, guest appearances were plenteous. Donnie McClurkin, Hezekiah Walker, Faith Evans, Richard Smallwood, and Carl Thomas all contributed to the album. Even jazz notables Ramsey Lewis and Lalah Hathaway were on hand for a remake of the Bible Stories classic "Don't Forget To Remember". The effort earned Lawrence a total of 7 Stellar Award nominations, and 6 wins.
In March 2006, The Tri-City Singers announced that they would retire, but not before one last live recording. Finale: Act One and Finale: Act Two were released simultaneously on April 4, 2006. Each release was a CD/DVD set that chronicled the audio and video of one half of the concert, with packages that locked into one another respectively. A special edition of Finale was later released with both CDs and DVDs. The blowout concert included guest appearances from Bishop Walter Hawkins, Karen Clark Sheard, Vanessa Bell Armstrong, Daryl Coley, LaShun Pace, Darwin Hobbs, and many other gospel luminaries. The album's lead single "The Blessing Of Abraham" was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Gospel Performance in December 2006. His sophomore solo album, The Law of Confession Part I was released in February 2009. Donald said in an interview that The Law of Confession, Part II will be released soon, but he's focusing on other projects.

Sometimes Christians are called to turn the world upside down. To bring the exact opposite of what we find in our world. St. Francis' prayer is a bold one, asking for strength to give of ourselves to meet the needs of others. He recognizes that it "is in giving that we receive", that as we give of ourselves, we receive the peace and blessing of our risen Lord Jesus. We cannot earn eternal life, but that we are pardoned from the sins that block our claim on it.
